In 2005, Quetico Park launched a trial Outfitter Certification Concept Project to: - bring outfitters together to improve public messaging and promote appropriate behaviour such as: waste management, disturbance of archaeological sites etc
- encourage outfitters to cooperate on park research projects
- promote public service and safety for visitors
- encourage outfitters to develop their products and their customer base and so increase use in the less heavily used northern entry points.
The need for the 2005 program was founded in that over 60 outfitters in the US and Canada were providing different and sometimes inaccurate information to visitors about Quetico Park policies and regulations. There was also little opportunity for outfitters to meet or work together to discuss opportunities and concerns. Since 2005, Quetico Park has been bringing people together and providing basic training to improve consistency. | Some early successes included: - A Quetico Interior Park Etiquette Binder has been prepared to assist outfitters in orienting their customers.
- Outfitters have cooperated on many research projects and have agreed to abide by environmentally beneficial policies.
- Certified Outfitters receive promotional display materials and their names are displayed in entry stations and the Quetico Park newsletter.
Looking to the future, Quetico Park hopes to expand the program by increasing participation and the benefits offered to outfitters and businesses. Quetico Park's 2009 Centennial year provides a stage to launch and raise the profile of the newly expanded program. |
